We’d heard a lot about the Garmin Asus Nuvifone and had been waiting to see it for some time. So when it didn’t show up at CES we were disappointed. When it again failed to appear on another date they promised to have it out, we were skeptic. But it was there at CTIA and it was actually a pretty sleek phone.
Never get lost again. The Garmin Asus Nuvifone takes all the things you love about the Garmin Nuvi GPS unit and adds it into a smartphone with some of the latest specs and features. Combining an attractive touchscreen and black chassis, the Nuvifone is sturdy and seems pretty rugged. It’s a great phone for adventurers. Featuring 3G connectivity a 3.5” touchscreen and a 3MP camera, it’s got a lot features that also make it attractive beyond the GPS unit.
One feature the Nuvifone uses to the max is location based everything. With the built-in GPS technology it makes it easy to geo tag text messages, email and photos. It can also upload your location directly to social networking sites.
It’s nice to have a full on GPS in the phone, especially with the turn-by-turn directions. A GPS is a nice gadget to have around, especially travelling. But buying a GPS unit, that did nothing but give directions, seems like a little bit of waste and it’s just one more thing to pack. However, including it as part of the phone makes it something worth having and it’s probably something you could get addicted to on your vacations.
Today it’s all about combining and multi-functioning products. Having a combo of a really good GPS unit and a cell phone is right in line with what most electronics manufacturers are doing. There are a lot of phones out there that incorporate GPS technology, but only the Nuvifone will have the look, feel and functions of a real GPS unit on your phone.
No word yet on price or release date. With how long it took just to see the latest version of the Nuvifone in person, we imagine it will still be some time before the phone shows up on the market. While we like the features and think they will be worth quite a bit, if the Garmin/Asus combo doesn’t get the price down to a competitive level with the iPhone and other popular smartphones it won’t have a chance.
The Garmin Nuvifone G60 looks like it will be a pretty sleek phone with a lot of features that will set it apart from similar phones on the market. We’re excited about the combination of the GPS and the touchscreen phone, we think it will be really successful, if they can get the price down to a manageable range. The introduction of geo-tagged features that make location as important as what you’re saying adds an entirely new element and concept to the smartphone model.
